On Nyepi, which is New Year’s Day in the Balinese Saka Calendar, the island of Bali turns off all lights and sounds, all traffic stops, all worldly activities are abandoned and meditation is done, while silence and serenity dominate the entire island.

This year, Nyepi falls tomorrow, March 22, 2023!

Why travelers are planning to fly to or from Bali on or around this day please note: On this day the entire island of Bali will come to a halt – or “shut down” mode, to allow everyone to follow the prescribed ritual. . Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport will be closed. No flat ground or 24 hours. All traffic across Bali will be blocked. All the shops are closed. No pedestrian traffic is allowed on the beach or in the streets. The spot will be known to watchers as pecalang to know that this rule must be strictly obeyed. At night all the lights will be turned on. The hotel will close all the curtains so that no ray of light shines in from the outside. All sound and home music should be on the last volume.

In the afternoon before Niepia, and today before March 21, celebrations are held with giant papier-mache, called Ogoh-Ogoh, on the beach with great gamelan music. These are then set on fire, and it is believed that by burning any evil spirits who had brought disease and misery to the island, were also banished the previous year.

The day after Nyepi, which this year falls on the 23rd of March, is called Ngembak Geni. This is when Balinese Hindus visit families, neighbors and relatives to exchange indulgences – something similar to the Muslim Ied Al Fitri custom in Indonesia. They will also conduct Dharma Canthi by reciting Sloka, Kekidung, and other religious scriptures. Although a series of rituals take place virtually all over the island, the best time to watch Nyepi festivities is when people arrange ogoh-ogoh through the streets. large effigies will then be burned on the beach.

The best place to observe Ogoh-Ogoh Paradise is at Lombok’s Hindu Community near Lombok Lodge, Boutique Hotel or Lombok Manete Private Villa Estate is at Tanjung Village – area #PassLocal – https://goo.gl/maps/CsPi9jPGVYRnC2nN7 – starting at 3pm.
